This is an 11"X17" full color poster I just finished for Packrat Comics' Free Comic Book Day on May 7th, 2011. It's this all day crazy con/festival held annually by the owners of the shop when all the major comic companies hand out free copies of their best stuff. And I DO mean free. FREE!
Tons of super talented artists will be there. Also, face painting, bouncy houses, bands, festival chow, pizza, costume contests, other contests, Stan Lee and Josh Medors signed Amazing Spiderman prints, Batman's Steve Scott (reviewing portfolios on Sunday), Nicolas Brendon (Xander from Buffy TVS) and Billy West (the voice actor of all the characters in my illo.) If you get in line to get an autograph from Billy West, buy my poster and you'll have the world's finest collectible.

Packrat Comics Art Show!

I was invited recently to participate in a live art event at Packrat Comics in Hilliard. On Saturday, December 18th, from 11 AM until 7 PM I'll be there with copies of Matilda Turnip's Endless Belly Button, the 5 dollar prints of comic heroes (see post below), doing commissions and selling original paintings. Muppet fans are going to want to see the originals... MEEP!
Mindy will be there, too! We're splitting a table! She'll have her hand made, high quality superhero capes, superhero blankets and quilts and Jedi Knight robes! She'll be taking orders and selling what she has on hand.

Please come out. All books will be personalized and there'll be plenty of items within 5 to 15 dollar range. All proceeds go to Sammy and Adam Peters' Christmas.

So, Matilda Turnip's Endless Belly Button is now on lulu.com available for sale in paperback and download. Go here and order yourself a copy or three. Everyone has a kid or a grandkid, neighbor, niece, nephew, godchild, friend's kid, etc. Those kids want this book! I promise. They told me. I was supposed to keep it all hush hush, but I have a big mouth. My main man, Sam Peters got his copy today and it looks SWEET! We've read it twice and he's carrying it around with him. He thinks Matilda is his cousin August. That's cool. I did sort of design her in Auggie's image and whatnots. Did you order this book yet? I'll shut up if you will.

Brother Rudy Peters

On Sunday, we lost a member of the Peters family. Rudy Peters was my Dad's miniature schnauzer. He was quirky, loyal, protective and always ready to play. He was a good boy and he was my brother. Yes, we're those weird dog people. No, we don't dress them up, take them shopping or carry them in handbags. But we do love them like family and let them sleep in our beds. We also give them voices...
Rudy loved playing frisbee and was pretty good at it, too. He had skills. When he caught the frisbee, he shook the stuffing out of it. He liked to go swimming in the pool and eating ice cubes that hit the floor. He loved the grandkids and would offer the infants his toys to play. He loved chasing and biting the boys Hot Wheels when they rolled them for him. If he was in the mood to play with his toys, he'd line them up at your feet like a display until you saw one you liked and would play with him. Two of my favorites were his Jolly Ball (this big, bouncy ball that was practically indestructible with a handle on it) that he would go nuts for if you bounced it on the hard wood floor. He also had a big, red dog we named Clifford that he chewed up so many times that he's a Frankenwiener at this point. My dad spent a ton of time sewing it back up. I have a lot of fond and wonderful memories of that little black schnauzer and he'll always be close to my heart.
I love you Rudy! Say hi to Max, Bailey, Maggie and Dave for me!! Now get off to that big ol' backyard in the sky!

Even though the book itself was accepted by Silverline Books and Image Comics, they still only publish the book (as they do all of their books) after a certain number of pre-orders have come in. Emphasis on pre. We have not met that number yet and we need to immediately.
I need you to please stop what you're doing this second and order this book for any child you may know. Kids love to read and I assure you that they'll love this book. The story is fantasy fun you haven't seen in a new book for 200 years. Honestly. And don't get me started on the illustrations!

If you live in the Columbus, OH area, may I suggest talking with the good folks at Packrat Comics in Hilliard off Cemetery Rd. they're good people and really supportive.

If you go the comic book shop route, you'll have it February 10th, 2010. So, it's a matter of when you really need it, I suppose. I urge you though to go support a small business in your area.

Max, King of the Wild Things

There's no way my wife will ever have her own blog to brag about the creative stuff she's done (and there's plenty).
So, I'll take this time to do it for her.
After balking at the cheap quality, limited selection and top shelf prices of this year's costumes, Mindy came up with the idea of Sam being Max from Where the Wild Things Are, one of our favorite books. Really, one of most everybody's favorite books. So, in two days she and her Mom created from an existing monkey costume pattern, Max's wolf costume. She decided to make it look like the illustrated version more than the film version. The end result is both precious and perfect.
Sadly, and as we predicted, most of the neighborhood recognized Sam to be a rabbit and/or a lamb. Obviously... not a bunch of readers. Not even readers of a nearly 50 year old, best selling, mostly illustrated, nine sentenced book. Yikes.
Anyway, hope you all enjoy.

So, the cat's out of the bag. Finally. I've been dying to post something about what I'm currently working on. It's a children's book for Silverline Books called Matilda Turnip's Endless Belly Button, written by Bethany James Leigh Shady. This is the cover.

Here's the summary:
Matilda Turnip lives a boring, unloved life with her mother Orla in a tiny Irish town whose population is made up mostly of grazing sheep. But one day, she finds that her belly button is a magical portal that exciting items have begun emerging from! Each item takes her on a new adventure where she meets new friends and eventually comes to an island where she is pleasantly surprised by someone from her past.

Did you know that Stevie Wonder was on "Sesame Street" many moons ago and played "Superstition" live on the very corner that Big Bird lives? I was in complete disbelief as I watched the video. Mostly because it was missing a few things. Where was Big Bird doing the Chicken? Or Bert doin' the Pigeon? I would like to think my man, Gordon would be in the front row. Ernie loves loud noises. Where were all the cast members when Stevie was playing one of his greatest tunes live... on the street they all fictiously live on?!
So, when I found this on my friend Justin Shady's brilliant blog, The Blarg, it inspired me to recreate that moment with some of the familiar elements strangely not found during the recording. Please note Mr. Hooper pounding the air bass on his broom...

Just watching the Pee Wee Herman Show on HBO. The original. The one that wasn't intended for kids. I watched that thing on VHS at Colin McBride's house so many times in elementary... along with Ghostbusters. It's amazing how well it still holds up. How I wish Kap n' Karl could have made it to the big screen with Pee Wee. I miss Phil Hartman SO much. He co-wrote Big Adventure with Paul Reubens, if ya didn't know. Brilliant. And Jambi... How I tormented my teachers with his chant.
Here's hoping Reubens gets his act together and gets that Pee Wee feature up and running that he's been threatening for ten plus years.

The next was a piece depicting another pitcher, Carlos Marmol changing his mind about joining the Dominican baseball team in the preseason. The original I turned in was a two headed monster I envisioned fighting his loyalties to both teams and coming to terms with one over the other. Then I had to make changes. The Vine Line crew decided against the Siamese deal and went with double Marmols and a more solid back drop. No biggie. It happens.

I wish I could say more for this sketch...
I kind of wrote a story for this character and I really don't feel comfortable saying too much about it due to copyright fears and thieving bastards running amuck via the internet.
I can say that this character is based in large part on one of my all time favorite people, my Aunt Becky. I didn't know her when she was a cute little red headed fop, but I've seen the pictures and I like to think I know her well... Anyway, Aunt Beck never had it this bad with the casts and whatnot. But this is my character... A sketch.
Gosh.
I really want to let the cat out of the bag on this one, but I just can't.

Wow. Where have I been...
I'm back on the sketch train TODAY. Got lucky with some freelance stuff and not so lucky with the flu. It kinda snowballed on me. I have no real excuse. I blame myself.

In the meantime, here's a flier I just did for my show on Saturday with my brother Trevor. We have a comedy act for those that don't know, called the Covered Peters. If you have the time and you're in the Cow Town area, it'd be great to see you there.

Ladies and gentlemen, today you get one of the greatest and most accomplished musicians to rarely get credit for the work he's done.

Paul McCartney calls him the fifth Beatle.
The Rolling Stones should be ashamed of themselves for the life long snub they gave him.

I was lucky enough to see him a few years before we lost him when he toured with Eric Clapton. I was actually more impressed with Billy that night than I was with Eric. His piano solo at the end of Layla was above and beyond spectacular. I was in the 10th row, right in front of that giant smile behind a keyboard.
He had a great deal to be happy about...
